Samsung Galaxy J5
Samsung launched the Samsung Galaxy J5 in 2015. It was a huge hit and one of the most popular handsets in the budget segment. The handset was released in a year when the Galaxy S6 series was actually attracting all the attention. The phone hit the market in the summer of that year, priced at around 200 euros. For that money, you got a well-equipped smartphone, where you could replace the back cover or the battery yourself. A distinctive feature was the smartphone’s silver bezel, regardless of which colour you chose for the device itself.
The Samsung Galaxy J5 featured a 5.0-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Below the screen were the physical home button and two touch-sensitive keys that responded to touch. The device itself was nice and compact, measuring 142.1 x 71.8 x 7.9 millimetres and weighing 146 grams. The device was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, alongside 1.5GB of RAM. Storage capacity was 8 GB and could be expanded with a memory card. A 5-megapixel selfie camera was positioned on the front. On the back, the Samsung Galaxy J5 had a 13-megapixel camera.
Samsung shipped the device with Android 5.1 Lollipop, with an update to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow later rolled out for the J5. It featured an FM radio, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 and location tracking via GPS, amongst other methods. The battery capacity was 2,600 mAh. It also supported the 4G network.
The Samsung Galaxy J5 was generally well received. The device was regarded as reliable, had a good battery life and a lovely screen. Some were less positive about the lack of a fingerprint scanner, the plastic casing and TouchWiz, which could feel sluggish after a while. In 2016 and 2017, Samsung released another J5 model. The J series was later replaced by the Galaxy A series.
