Sony promotes Xperia 1 VIII with failed AI photos

Sony announced the Sony Xperia 1 VIII last week. Among other things, the Japanese manufacturer's new high-end smartphone should have an improved camera, which (of course) also makes use of AI. However, all is not going so rosy.

The high-end smartphone segment is all about several things: good battery life, fast charging, high performance and of course: an incredibly good camera. Sony has been doing just that since this week with the Sony Xperia 1 VIII. The brand's new smartphone features three cameras, each with its own function. Sony supplies the phone with three 48-megapixel cameras: a main camera, wide-angle lens and a periscope telephoto lens that lets you zoom 2.9x. Many manufacturers use AI with the camera, and so does Sony. But whether it works out so well?

Although we are still awaiting a review sample of the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, early signs are not always positive. And remarkably enough: those signals are coming from Sony itself. The company is proudly promoting its AI Camera Assistant. This gives you suggestions while shooting. For example, for background blur, lens choice and colour tones. It should all result in a better photo.

The Sony website shows the photos below. Strangely, however, the AI assistant seems to make it a significantly worse photo, than how the standard photo is. It looked like a mistake to us earlier, but today a post was also shared on Instagram by Sony, in which we see exactly the same thing. In doing so, Sony uses it on each of its country pages and it has been online like this for several days. Even in the descriptions, it does not look like the original was actually supposed to be the final result.

Now it is mostly to hope that Sony lets you turn off the AI Assistant.
