Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime
You might not remember the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime all that clearly anymore. Today we’re taking a look at it in our 400th (!) edition of ‘The forgotten smartphone’. The device can best be described as a large, affordable Android smartphone with support for the 4G network. Although it didn’t fall into the ‘flagship’ category, it was a popular device and, for many users, their first introduction to Android. It was popular because of its large screen, affordability and decent cameras.

The Galaxy Grand Prime was launched at the end of 2014. The device was positioned between the Galaxy Core and the more expensive Galaxy A and S series. The device featured a 5.0-inch TFT-LCD screen with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. This was also known as qHD. With such a large screen, Samsung managed to set itself apart from the competition. Screens in phones were often smaller in size. Samsung equipped the Grand Prime with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, along with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. It supported a memory card of up to 64GB and featured a 3.5-millimetre headphone jack. It also included an FM radio.

In the press release for the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, Samsung was particularly effusive in its praise of the device’s (in-house) camera. The 5-megapixel front-facing camera allowed you to take a ‘groupfie’ – in other words, a selfie with a group of people. This was quite unique in this segment at the time. The field of view was approximately 85 degrees. An 8-megapixel camera was fitted to the rear of the Galaxy Grand Prime, complete with autofocus, an LED flash and support for 1080p Full HD video recording. The camera app offered a wide range of options, settings and customisations.
With the Galaxy Grand Prime, you could replace the 2600 mAh battery yourself. Charging was via the micro-USB port. Some versions of the Prime were also equipped with NFC. The device was launched with Android 4.4.4 KitKat, with a later update to Android Lollipop. This, of course, came with Samsung’s TouchWiz. With a price tag of around 200–250 euros, it was considerably cheaper than the Galaxy S5, which cost 700 euros.
