Quick Gemini button in Chrome
Google appears to be rolling out a revamped interface for Chrome on Android. The browser is undergoing a notable change: alongside a redesigned navigation bar, a dedicated Gemini button has also appeared. The new design is currently being rolled out gradually.
The biggest change is that Chrome will now feature two navigation bars. At the top, you’ll find the address bar, along with the back button, share button and menu. At the bottom, there’s a second bar with buttons for a new tab, tab management and a fixed shortcut to Gemini.
Gemini gets a permanent spot
Google had already announced in May that Gemini would be coming to Chrome. At the time, it seemed that the AI feature would simply appear next to the tab button. In the latest version, however, Google has opted for a clearer approach by giving Gemini its own button in the bottom bar. As a result, the bottom navigation bar is slightly higher than before, ensuring there is enough space for the extra button.
Last year, Google introduced the option to place the address bar and controls at the bottom of the screen. This made Chrome more user-friendly on smartphones with larger screens, as key buttons are easier to reach with one hand.
With this new layout, the bottom controls remain, but the interface is further expanded with separate top and bottom bars, as seen in screenshots from 9to5Google.
Roll-out is slow
Although the new interface is part of the stable version of Chrome for Android, the roll-out appears to be limited for the time being. According to the available information, the new design is only visible on some devices, even when they are using the same version of Chrome and have the same settings. Google had previously indicated that Gemini would be available in Chrome for Android by the end of June, but that deadline was not met. It now appears that the rollout has finally begun, albeit at a leisurely pace.
A similar interface has also previously appeared on an iPhone. This suggests that Google may wish to implement the same design choices across multiple mobile platforms.
