WhatsApp started testing third-party chat app support

WhatsApp is coming with support and integration of chat apps from other developers. This message has been circulating for some time, but now the chat service has actually started testing this integration.

Chatting via third-party apps on the go

WhatsApp has released a new test version, allowing users to integrate third-party chat apps into WhatsApp. The messaging service has been working on this feature for some time; an obligation from European regulations. In the latest beta, some users get access to this feature.

The functionality allows users from multiple chat apps to join the same chat conversation. As a result, you don't all have to install a different chat app. Furthermore, one-to-one chats can also be conducted this way. This is subject to strict privacy and security rules.

When the new feature is available, users can activate it through WhatsApp's settings. To do so, go to Settings > Account > Chats. Sending and receiving messages is supported, as is exchanging photos, videos, voice messages and documents. You can choose a combined or separate inbox. Status updates, stickers and disappearing messages are not supported with third-party apps.
