With the 80 Pro Max, Honor is going all out on a massive battery and a very bright screen

Honor has announced a new smartphone: the Honor 80 Pro Max. The company’s new high-end smartphone is set to stand out in at least two areas: its enormous battery capacity and the high brightness of its display.

Honor 80 Pro Max

Honor has already given us a sneak peek at the new 80 Pro Max. The smartphone will be officially unveiled on 22 June, but some notable specifications have already been revealed. The battery and the screen, in particular, stand out.

The Honor 80 Pro Max will feature a battery with a capacity of no less than 11,000 mAh. This would make it the largest battery ever fitted in one of the brand’s smartphones. By way of comparison: many devices from Samsung, Apple and Google have a battery capacity of around 5,000 mAh, whilst many recent Chinese competitors offer around 7,000 mAh.

The fact that such a large battery still fits into a relatively slim body is down to the use of silicon-carbon technology. These batteries have a higher energy density, allowing for greater capacity without making the device much thicker.

Honor is also aiming to impress in the field of display technology. According to the company, the screen of the 80 Pro Max achieves a peak brightness of 10,000 nits. That would be a new record for smartphones.

However, an important caveat is worth noting here. That maximum brightness is intended solely for small, very bright sections of HDR content, such as a flash of light or an explosion in a film. You won’t encounter this level during normal use. Even with the brightness slider fully open or in bright sunlight, that peak brightness isn’t reached.

In recent years, a clear race has emerged, particularly amongst Chinese smartphone manufacturers, to list ever-higher brightness figures in their specifications. In practice, however, a higher peak brightness does not automatically mean that a screen looks much brighter. As the figures rise further, the visible differences for users become increasingly smaller.

For the time being, Honor is focusing its announcements on the Chinese market. It is not yet known whether the 80 Pro Max will also be released in Europe, and therefore in the Netherlands and Belgium. It is not uncommon for devices with these specifications to be released exclusively in China or to reach other markets later in a modified form.

Further details about the Honor 80 Pro Max are expected during the official launch next week.
