Birthday reminder on WhatsApp
The new birthday notifications build on an earlier change whereby WhatsApp asked some users to enter their date of birth. This was originally done to comply with age verification legislation in various countries. That information may now have a second purpose: sending reminders when a contact has a birthday.
According to reports, WhatsApp is working on a separate page where you can view your contacts’ upcoming birthdays. On the birthday itself, you’ll also receive a notification in the app. This means you no longer need to use a separate calendar or try to remember all the birthdays yourself. As many people already use WhatsApp to send birthday wishes, this addition seems a logical step.

The feature only works if a contact has shared their date of birth with WhatsApp. If someone hasn’t entered that information, the app won’t be able to display a birthday reminder. The principle is the same as with Telegram. That chat app displays a notification at the top of the home screen when it’s someone’s birthday from your contact list.
It is not yet known whether WhatsApp will add privacy options allowing you to hide your birthday from others. There is no release date as yet. WhatsApp is currently refining the feature before making it available to beta testers. Only then will it become clear when birthday notifications will be rolled out to all users.
