Smart glasses from Samsung
Samsung held its own Unpacked event and showcased a number of key products. These included the Z Fold 8 series and the Galaxy Z Flip 8, along with two new smartwatches. But there was another product on display: the Galaxy Glasses.
According to Samsung, the smart glasses are designed to bring AI closer to your everyday life, without you having to constantly use a smartphone. The glasses do not have a built-in screen, but assist you with voice commands, audio and smart features whilst you simply continue to look around you.
For example, you can have long messages summarised or read aloud, have conversations translated in real time, and ask for help with navigation or information about your surroundings whilst on the move. They are controlled via voice commands or hand gestures. A paired Galaxy Watch 9 is required for gesture control.
Camera and speaker
A camera and speakers are built into the frame. The camera provides Gemini with visual context, enabling the AI to better understand what you’re looking at. For example, you can have it capture a whiteboard or notes during a meeting. The key information is then automatically organised in Samsung Notes, so you can easily review or share it later. You can also record videos from your own perspective or share what you’re seeing live during a video call.
Designed for everyday use
Samsung emphasises that the smart glasses must, above all, be comfortable to wear all day long. The lightweight frame has a slim design and, according to the company, the battery lasts up to nine hours. With the included charging case, you can also fully recharge the glasses seven more times.
The necessary hardware, such as touch controls, wireless connections and cooling, is fully integrated into the frame. For performance, Samsung utilises the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 platform.
Two styles
As glasses are also a fashion accessory, Samsung is collaborating with two well-known eyewear brands. The Gentle Monster edition features a sleek black frame with a modern look. The Warby Parker edition, on the other hand, comes in a warm brown colour and has a subtly rising brow line for a more classic look. Both models have been designed with great attention to comfort and fit.
Competitor to Meta Ray-Ban
With this launch, Samsung is entering the same market as the smart glasses from Meta and Ray-Ban. Like those models, the Galaxy glasses do not have a screen, but they do feature a camera, speakers and AI functions that assist with everyday tasks.
Samsung sees the glasses as a hands-free extension of your Galaxy devices. Thanks to the collaboration with Google, Gemini responds to what you see and do, allowing the AI to support you in a natural way whilst working, travelling or carrying out other daily activities.
Although Samsung has not yet announced a price or release date, Google previously stated that the first Android XR glasses are expected this autumn. This suggests that the launch of Samsung’s first smart glasses is not far off.
