Three new foldable devices
During this afternoon’s Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung announced three new smartphones. These are three foldable models: the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Fold 8 Ultra and the Flip 8. There are a number of similarities. For example, the phones feature new Flex Titanium technology, which makes the display construction thinner without compromising on sturdiness. Thanks to a reinforced titanium plate and other technical adjustments, pressure and shocks are distributed more effectively, and the fold should also be less noticeable. Furthermore, there’s a high brightness of up to 3,000 nits, and the anti-reflective finish ensures the screen remains clearly legible even on sunny days.
All three foldables will launch with Android 17 and the new One UI 9. Another common feature is the processor: the Fold models are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Elite. Samsung and Qualcomm have collaborated on a ‘For Galaxy’ processor that achieves a slightly higher clock speed than the standard model. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 features the Exynos 2600 chip. Furthermore, a wide range of AI features are available, alongside Now Nudge and Now Brief, and Samsung promises a high level of security for the devices.
Galaxy Z Fold 8
The most striking of these is the ‘standard’ Fold 8. This is not, in fact, a direct successor to the Fold 7, as it has been given a completely different design. The device features a 10:16-inch 5.5-inch cover screen, which, according to the South Korean manufacturer, is designed to better match the way people consume content on a daily basis. It is said to be ideal for short videos, messages and social media, as well as for browsing the internet. When unfolded, a 4:3 main screen appears, which really does justice to films and games, for example. You can, of course, rotate the screen, making it ideal for reading long texts or articles, for example on DroidApp.
Samsung proudly announces that, at 201 grams, it is the lightest Fold ever. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 features a 4,800 mAh battery and supports 45W charging or 20W wireless charging. For photography, the phone offers two rear cameras: a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens. There is also a 10-megapixel selfie camera and a 10-megapixel camera in the unfolded main screen.
Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra
The ‘true’ successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is this Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. In terms of design, it bears the closest resemblance to last year’s high-end foldable. The ‘Ultra’ suffix refers to the maximum productivity that, according to Samsung, you can get out of this device. You still unfold it like a book, revealing the 8.0-inch main screen. On the front of the smartphone is a 6.5-inch cover screen. Whilst the ‘standard’ Fold 8 was the lightest foldable, the Z Fold 8 Ultra (when unfolded) is the company’s thinnest foldable ever: 4.1 millimetres thick; 0.1 millimetres thinner than the Fold 7.
Samsung has equipped the device with a 200-megapixel camera, a 50-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens. Night-time photography, in particular, should be even better with this device. For videographers, the device supports 8K video via the APV codec, which offers greater freedom during post-production. It features a 5,000 mAh battery that can be charged at 45W.
Galaxy Z Flip 8
Finally, there’s the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8, which is the company’s slimmest Flip yet, at just 6.1 millimetres thick. It is also the lightest, weighing 180 grams. Samsung has developed a new FlexWindow, which gives you direct access to apps, notifications and AI features on the cover screen. You can also launch Gemini (Intelligence) straight away and access Samsung’s own apps, such as Now Brief. For photography, the device is equipped with a 50-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens. When unfolded, there is also a 10-megapixel selfie camera. Furthermore, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 features a 4,300 mAh battery. Unlike last year, when the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE was unveiled, there is no FE model of the foldables this year.
