Samsung Gallery discontinues OneDrive backup integration

For owners of a Samsung Galaxy device, an important change is being made to the Gallery app. Soon, the direct link between Samsung Gallery and OneDrive will end. Things are changing for both existing and new users.

Do you use a Samsung phone and back up your photos via OneDrive in the Samsung Gallery app? If so, things will change later this year. Microsoft has confirmed that the direct link between Samsung Gallery and OneDrive will end on 30 September 2026. From that date, new users will no longer be able to connect their Samsung Gallery app to OneDrive for automatic syncing of photos and videos. The collaboration between Samsung and Microsoft thus partially disappears from view.

For existing users, it does not mean that your backups will disappear immediately, but you will have to switch to the separate OneDrive app to save new photos and videos automatically. Microsoft therefore advises users to adjust their settings in time. The change seems small at first glance, but the way it works will be a little less smooth. Until now, OneDrive backup was directly built into Samsung Gallery. You only had to log in with your Microsoft account and everything worked automatically from the gallery app itself.

With the new situation, you have to install the separate OneDrive app and give permission for full access to your photos and videos. After that, backup will be via that app instead of directly via Samsung Gallery.

For many users, this is likely to have little impact. Services like Google Photos are already hugely popular on Android for photo backups, partly due to its extensive search, automatic albums and smart AI features.

OneDrive, by the way, will remain available as a storage service for photos and videos as usual. Only the direct integration into Samsung Gallery disappears. If you have previously stored photos via OneDrive, they will remain accessible via the OneDrive app.

Why Microsoft and Samsung are stopping the integration has not been officially explained. A possible factor is that relatively few people were actively using the feature, especially now that Google Photos is standard on many Android devices. The change officially goes into effect on 30 September 2026. Until then, the current synchronisation will continue to work for existing users.
