Apple's Siri will use Gemini

Google and Apple already collaborate in several areas, despite being great competitors. Another collaboration is now imminent, and involves Siri. Gemini will be used for the assistant.

Siri will use Gemini

The smart assistant on the iPhone is facing a major upgrade. At a recent conference, Google confirmed that the revamped version of Siri will use Gemini, Google's own AI platform.

That collaboration with Apple had previously been announced, but is now becoming more concrete. The new technology will form the basis for the next generation of Apple Intelligence, which is expected to be presented at the Worldwide Developers Conference. If all goes according to plan, users will see the updated features in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 later this year.

What does that mean for users? Mainly that Siri should become smarter and more personal. Thanks to Gemini, the assistant can better understand what you mean, hold context and respond more extensively. Think more natural conversations and more useful answers, instead of the sometimes limited responses you might be used to now.

The move is notable because it means Apple is partly leaning on technology from Google. At the same time, it fits the trend of big tech companies working together to make faster progress in artificial intelligence.

There are still some open questions, though. For instance, it is not clear where exactly the AI is running: on Google's servers or through Apple's own cloud solution. This is relevant to issues such as privacy and speed. Apple may provide more clarity on that during its developer conference.

The revamped Siri has been a while in coming. Originally planned earlier, the update was delayed due to accuracy issues. With the deployment of Gemini, a solution now seems to be in sight.
