Larger battery in the Galaxy S27 series

Samsung appears to be taking a significant step forward in the field of smartphone batteries. Following the introduction of silicon-carbon batteries in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, the company has indicated that this technology may also be coming to other Galaxy smartphones. At the same time, there are rumours that the Galaxy S27 Ultra will finally receive a significant battery upgrade.

Silicon-carbon batteries can store more energy in the same size as traditional lithium-ion batteries. Some manufacturers are now using this technology for smartphones with batteries of 7,000 mAh or even 10,000 mAh. We’re already seeing them in various smartphones; for example, the high-end Oppo Find X9 Ultra is fitted with such a battery, with a capacity of 7,050 mAh. Other (Chinese) brands are also embracing the technology in a big way; we’re seeing this with brands such as Xiaomi, too.

Samsung is taking a cautious approach for the time being. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 4,800 mAh battery, whilst the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery. The latter is particularly striking, as the device has simultaneously become thinner than its predecessor.

Safety comes first

During a private briefing, Samsung stated that safety, stability and a long service life are the top priorities in the development of new batteries. According to the company, new technology is only adopted once it is reliable enough for everyday use. Undoubtedly, the Galaxy Note 7 debacle is still fresh in people’s minds.

Samsung has not yet confirmed which future devices will feature the new battery technology, but has indicated that this will be assessed on a product-by-product basis. A key consideration in this regard is whether the battery actually contributes to a better user experience.

Galaxy S27 Ultra with a larger battery

Rumours suggest that the Galaxy S27 series will be the next range of devices to benefit from silicon-carbon batteries. The Galaxy S27 Ultra, in particular, is expected to benefit from this. According to recent information, the device will feature a battery with a nominal capacity of 5534 mAh. In practice, this would equate to an advertised capacity of approximately 5700 to 5800 mAh. This would mean Samsung is finally moving away from the 5,000 mAh battery that has featured in virtually every Ultra smartphone since the Galaxy S20 Ultra in 2020.

The new Galaxy S27 Pro is also expected to feature a larger battery. Reports suggest a nominal capacity of 5,087 mAh, which is likely to equate to a typical capacity of between 5,200 and 5,300 mAh. No details are yet available regarding the standard Galaxy S27 and Galaxy S27 Plus.

The future

Although Samsung has not yet officially confirmed the Galaxy S27 series, the direction seems clear. With silicon-carbon batteries, the company can use larger batteries without smartphones having to become thicker or heavier.

If the rumours are correct, this will mean a long-awaited improvement in the battery life of Samsung’s flagship models. Official details are unlikely to be revealed until the Galaxy S27 series is announced early next year.
