The forgotten smartphone: Samsung S8000 Jet

The first mobile phone with a blazingly fast 800 MHz processor; that was the Samsung S8000 Jet, named after a fast plane, of course. We discuss the Samsung Jet in this edition of ‘The forgotten smartphone’.

Samsung Jet

The Samsung Jet was in between a smartphone and non-smartphone. Yet it had many features that a smartphone had in 2009 as well. The Samsung S8000 Jet had WiFi support and UMTS/HSDPA was also present on the smartphone. There was a 3.1-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. Below the screen was a hexagonal key, with call buttons on the sides. On the side, there was also a camera key for taking pictures.

You could unlock the Jet in various ways, including writing a letter. Taking photos could be done with the 5 megapixel camera, which featured a dual-flash and autofocus. Photos could be uploaded from the phone directly to various services such as Picasa, Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket or MySpace.

There was 2GB or 8GB of storage available and this could be expanded with a memory card of up to 16GB. Most special was the, for the time, lightning-fast processor. A Qualcomm MSM6246; a single-core with a computing power of 800 MHz. The battery had a capacity of 1100 mAh and took four (!) hours to charge.

The Samsung Jet also had a 3.5mm audio jack, TV-out port, Micro-USB connector and GPS on board. At the back, the design also stood out. Although it looked like glass, it was plastic; but with a special effect with purple-red stripes. The operating system was Samsung's own, with the familiar TouchWiz features.

Samsung Jet Motion Control

Also special was Motion Control; where a cube opens with shortcuts. You could control these by rotating the device. Nice thought, but it really didn't work well. In 2009, I got to review the phone for GSM Helpdesk, unfortunately it can no longer be found online.

The Samsung S8000 Jet came on the market in black, but there was also a white and pink colour of the device. When the phone hit the market in 2009, it had a price tag of around €400.

Samsung S8000 Jet summarised in 5 points:

  • 800 MHz processor
