First impression of the new Android Auto: Gemini finally feels in place

At Google I/O last month, the new version of Android Auto was shown off. The necessary improvements have been made in this new version. Finally, Gemini also seems to have found its niche.

New version of Android Auto

Android Auto is being significantly improved. The new version of Android Auto was announced in May. Now, colleagues at 9to5Google have tested the latest version and they share their initial findings. Clearly, Google has put a lot of work into the new version of Android Auto.

Google showed off an updated version of Android Auto at I/O 2026, with a bigger role for Gemini, new map features and more entertainment options. After a first look, the AI assistant in particular seems like a logical addition to the dashboard.

One of the biggest changes is the arrival of Gemini to Android Auto. According to initial experiences, the AI assistant feels more useful in the car than on a smartphone. You can ask questions about your route, traffic situations or locations you see on the road, without having to scroll through menus yourself. This makes operation while driving a lot more natural.

Google Maps also gets an upgrade. The new Immersive View adds more 3D detail to navigation maps, making it easier to recognise landmarks and complex intersections. Especially in unfamiliar areas, this can help you find your way faster. However, the question remains how well this feature does justice on smaller infotainment screens.

In addition, Android Auto is extended with YouTube support. Watching videos can only be done when the car is stationary, but listening to long videos or podcasts on the road offers additional entertainment options during longer drives.

Not everything equally interesting

Not all innovations make an immediate impact. Google is also introducing widgets for the dashboard, similar to those on Android smartphones. Think weather information, smart devices or media controls. While some widgets may be handy, it remains to be seen how many drivers will actually use these while driving.

Another notable addition is Magic Cue. This feature tries to offer context-based relevant information without you having to ask for it. Think reminders, travel information or suggestions that fit your schedule. Especially in the car, where you want to be as little distracted as possible, this subtle approach seems to work well.

Still, there are areas of concern. Many of the new features depend on a stable internet connection and cloud processing. When the connection goes down, some smart features may not function as well.

Nevertheless, the first impression is positive. The revamped Android Auto looks more modern, offers more practical information while driving and gives Gemini a role that actually adds value. If Google refines the features further, this could be one of the most useful Android Auto updates in recent years.
