Android devices are getting some much-needed improvements, courtesy of June's Android Feature Drop. Every quarter, Google releases such an update, which means that new features have also been announced by the company. Among other things, there is the hint that Android 17 is not long in coming, judging by a first hint. We expect this new version around summer, when Google presents the new Pixel 11 series.

One notable enhancement can be found in Quick Share. Google continues to work on AirDrop-like sharing compatibility between devices. The feature is now supported on more recent smartphones, including several models from Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Vivo and Honor. This makes it easier to quickly exchange files between supported devices, including Apple devices.

Google Play Books is also getting a new AI feature. With 'Book Insights', you can request additional information about a book while reading. A new icon will open a chat environment where you can ask questions about themes, characters or the context of a story. In addition, you can select specific text fragments to go deeper into the content. The feature will first be rolled out for a selection of English-language books.

An expansion for younger users is also coming. The Personal Safety app will soon be available for children under 13. With it, they can visualise medical details and emergency contacts on the lock screen. Features such as accident detection, safety checks and sharing location data with emergency contacts will also become available. In addition, you can more quickly spot scammers posing as your contacts. Google explains more in this article.

Google Photos is additionally getting the previously announced Wardrobe feature. This will analyse your photo library and automatically create a list of clothes you own. You can then digitally combine different garments. The rollout will start next week for Android 10 and newer, first in the US, India and Brazil.

Circle to Search is also getting smarter. With the new 'Find the look' feature, you can recognise and look up all parts of an outfit at once. So you no longer have to select individual pieces of clothing.

Finally, Google again adds new combinations to Emoji Kitchen, allowing you to merge existing emojis into new creations.

While this update is mostly about minor improvements and AI features, perhaps the most interesting announcement is that Google is already looking ahead to Android 17. The company let it be known that more details about the next major Android release will follow soon. With that, the focus seems to be slowly shifting from the current updates to what awaits Android users later this year.
