Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1 gives preview of major September update

Google has released a new update to Android 17. The update released now is Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1, giving a taste of September's big Pixel Feature Drop update.

Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1

If you use a Pixel device and follow Android developments a bit, things are moving fast. For Google has already released another test version immediately after the last beta of Android 17: Android 17 QPR1 Beta 1.

That name may sound technical, but the idea is simple. QPR stands for "Quarterly Platform Release": updates that appear quarterly and focus mainly on behind-the-scenes improvements. This first QPR1 beta previews the so-called Feature Drop expected in September.

Do not expect any major new features or notable design changes in this version. The focus is mainly on stability. Several bugs have been fixed, for instance, including an issue where print jobs could crash if your printer was running low on ink. A stuck Terminal app, audio problems on calls and issues with sound output have also been addressed.

For you, this mainly means a smoother experience, although you may not notice it immediately in everyday use. These kinds of updates mostly take place under the bonnet.

The beta is available for a wide range of Pixel devices, from older models like the Pixel 6 to the latest generation. If you are in the beta programme, you can get the update automatically. However, it is still wise to back up first, as it is still test software.

In doubt whether to install? Then the familiar trade-off applies: if you want early access and help testing, then this is interesting. If you prefer to use your device without risk, it is better to wait for the final updates.
