Android 17 leak: much more control over colours and appearance

We have already seen several test versions of Android 17 passing by, and now there is a big leak about this new Android version, as users get much more control over colours and the appearance of the interface. What does Google have in store with Androi...

More to personalise in Android 17

With Android 17, Google finally seems to be making a much-requested improvement to Material You. Leaked screenshots show that users will soon be able to choose their own accent colours, instead of depending entirely on the colours Android automatically pulls from your background.

Multiple preset styles would become available in the revamped 'Background and style' settings. This would allow you to choose a neutral view with shades of grey, a softer version with subtle colours or, conversely, a brighter style with more striking accents. There also seems to be a "Bold" mode coming that combines multiple colours for a more vibrant look.

The biggest change, however, is in the new colour picker. A slider will soon let you decide which accent colour you want to use in the system. Android will immediately show a preview of how menus, buttons and other parts will look. This gives you much more freedom to really customise the look of your phone to your own taste.

In addition, the leaked images also show additional blurring effects in the interface. These provide a more modern look and give Android a bit more depth visually. Google experimented with this before, but in this version the effect seems to be more extensively present.

For many Android users, this is a welcome step. Since the introduction of Material You, many people appreciated the dynamic themes, but at the same time there was criticism of the lack of manual control. Especially the limited choice of colours remained a recurring comment among Android users.

When exactly these changes will become available is not yet clear. The current test versions of Android 17 do not officially include the new options yet. As a result, it seems more likely that Google will add the features later via an interim update, possibly around the introduction of new Google Pixel devices.
