Chrome update puts an end to well-known ad blockers once and for all

Do you use an ad blocker in Google Chrome? If so, an upcoming update could have major consequences. Google is finalising the transition to Manifest V3, a new system for browser extensions. This will also remove the last remaining option to continue usi...

No more adblocker in Chrome?

The transition to Manifest V3 has been underway for several years. Users of popular ad blockers, in particular, have voiced criticism, as the new rules restrict the functionality of many existing ad blockers. The first effects were already becoming apparent in 2024, but now the end of Manifest V2 really does seem to be near.

According to information from Chromium, the open-source basis of Chrome, Google will soon remove a special flag that allowed Manifest V2 extensions to continue working. Some users saw this flag as a final workaround to keep using older extensions.

Google now considers this code redundant. According to a company employee, Manifest V2 extensions are no longer supported in modern versions of Chrome. Google cites technical complexity, maintenance costs and potential security risks as reasons for permanently ending support for the old extensions.

For users, this means that popular extensions still dependent on Manifest V2, such as older ad blockers, will soon no longer function in Chrome. Among others, uBlock Origin in its original form is one of the extensions affected by this change.

The changes will be implemented in two stages. With Chrome 150, expected at the end of June, the main option for enabling Manifest V2 extensions will be removed. In Chrome 151, scheduled for July, the last remaining elements of Manifest V2 will also be removed.

The impact may not be limited to Chrome alone. Other Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge and Opera, may follow suit. At the same time, other browser makers are free to continue supporting the older extensions for longer.

For many users, this update marks the definitive end of an era in which classic ad blockers were a staple of the browsing experience for years. Anyone who relies on such extensions would be well advised to check whether a Manifest V3-compatible successor is now available.
