Microsoft account required for SwiftKey
Most Android devices come standard with Google's own Gboard keyboard. In the Google Play Store, however, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from. SwiftKey Keyboard is one of the most popular keyboard apps for Android and has been owned by Microsoft since 2016. To use the application, until now you can log in with a Microsoft account, but also with your Google or Apple account. This is about to change. All SwiftKey accounts must be linked to a Microsoft account from 31 May 2026.

Microsoft started informing users this week. The email states that linking to a Microsoft account should ensure that typing behaviour and personal dictionaries are stored more securely. The cloud service OneDrive, also from Microsoft, will be used for this purpose. The company reveals that users will also benefit from improved privacy protection and easier access to data across devices.
If you already use your Microsoft account to sign in to SwiftKey, you don't need to do anything. The data will then be automatically copied to OneDrive. If you currently use a Google or Apple account, you need to link a Microsoft account before 31 May. If you don't already have an account of that, you will need to create one. Microsoft informs that all SwiftKey account data will be deleted after 31 May 2026.
