Samsung Galaxy Ring review: stylish little health wonder

Health trackers come in many forms like watches but this ring is slightly different. What can you do with the Samsung Galaxy Ring and how do you use it? We tell you in this Galaxy Ring review.

Samsung Galaxy Ring review

Samsung recently released this smart health tracker in the form of a ring. Now, of course, a ring is a very personal product. Whereas with a watch you can often get by with the standard strap. Buying a ring is already a very different matter. Fortunately, Samsung knows this too, and before you proceed to buy the ring, you can order a handy sizing kit. In this kit, you will find 9 different diameters with which you can determine the ideal fit for yourself.

The manufacturer advises you not to wear the ring directly next to another finger with a ring. We chose a "size" 10 and wear it on the ring finger on the non-dominant hand. That is likewise the hand where I wear my smartwatch (Garmin Epix) and am therefore also curious to see if the measurements are somewhat the same.

Overall impression

The Samsung Galaxy Ring comes in a nice storage case that doubles as a charger. Placing the ring in it recharges it and also prevents you from losing it. By the way, that storage case also supports wireless charging and a USB-C output can be found on the back of the cradle.

Now, the ring is available in 3 colours and these are Titanium Black, Silver and Gold. By doing so, Samsung is at least trying to make sure that this ring matches your personal style nicely. We received the Titanium Black variant and I must say that it looks very sleek in terms of design. What is also nice is the finish on the inside of the ring that ensures that it stays in place comfortably for longer periods of time.

That the ring does not have any other indicators or can provide something of a distraction like a smartwatch can, can be both a lack and a godsend for some users. If you want to access your health data, you can do so on the app via the phone you are probably carrying anyway. That app we will get into that later, but first a word about the battery life and other fine features on the ring.

Samsung Galaxy Ring ervaringen

We can go about seven days with the Galaxy Ring before it has to go back into the charging case. That's a nice score and it also ensures that you can keep track of your activity data on an ongoing basis. Another plus is that the ring is also 10 ATM waterproof, so hand washing and showering are not something you need to worry about.

Sleep tracking

In terms of sleep tracking, I personally think Samsung's data is a lot clearer and more comprehensively presented. You can view data on your heart rate and body temperature in a graph display. Below that, you can also find, for example, minimum and maximum values. Moreover, the app also gives you more information about the meaning of the different values.

In use while sleeping, I have nothing to note about the Galaxy Ring. It sits comfortably throughout the night. However, you do notice the greenish light produced by the sensors in the dark. In terms of sleep stages, the Garmin and Galaxy Ring agreed with each other, and this has been true more often while testing the Galaxy Ring.

Samsung Health app

Now, you already saw a bit about the sleep tracking in the Samsung Health app above, but this app tells you more than just detailed sleep statistics. For instance, the ring also counts the number of steps you take in a day and keeps you motivated by means of a heart with three rings to fill. It is then all about achieving a number of steps, active time and number of calories to fill it up.

Furthermore, the app has the option of tracking the number of glasses of water drunk, as well as keeping track of food and body weight. For our female readers, you can also use the app to track your menstrual cycle. If you want to change the order of the data in the Health app, you can do that too. So basically, Samsung's Health app is nice and complete and you can effortlessly sync data from the Galaxy Ring.

Via Health Connect, you can also have your data from the Samsung app synced to Google Fit, for example. Furthermore, the Samsung Health app also has a link to Strava for forwarding your workouts and/or walks.

Review

With a price tag of 450 euros, this Samsung Galaxy Ring is certainly on the pricey side but this tracker is packed with sensors and features a beautiful design. If you don't want the distractions of a smartwatch but still want to view health data, then this Galaxy Ring is definitely worth considering. If you still prefer an extra screen in the form of a watch, then this Ring may not be for you.

You can purchase the Galaxy Ring directly from Samsung. This will give you a Sizing Kit right away, so you can properly determine your size. You can also get the Galaxy Ring from Odido and MediaMarkt. Coolblue only sells it in selected shops.
