‘OnePlus is likely to become a product line within Oppo’

For several months now, there have been rumours circulating that OnePlus is on the verge of disappearing – at least from the European market. Although things have been a bit quieter on this front recently, new information is now coming to light. Is One...

Oppo to launch a OnePlus product range?

There are new rumours circulating about a major reorganisation at Oppo. According to various sources, the company is considering no longer allowing OnePlus and Realme to operate as independent brands, but instead incorporating them as product lines within Oppo.

The reports follow the departure of Michael Guo, the CEO of Realme India. He is stepping down from his role for health reasons and will be succeeded by Vice-Chairman Chase Xu. His departure coincides with indications that Oppo is working behind the scenes on a new organisational structure.

Although Oppo, OnePlus and Realme have long been part of parent company BBK Electronics, the brands operate largely independently from a commercial perspective. That could be set to change. According to rumours, Oppo wants to integrate the brands more closely in order to operate more efficiently. This could mean that, in future, OnePlus and Realme will no longer be independent brands, but rather product lines within the Oppo range.

Exactly what this means for the products or staff remains unclear. However, there is talk of a possible reorganisation and the merging of distribution networks. Earlier this year, the CEO of OnePlus India also left the company, which, according to some sources, is also part of this broader change of direction. In Europe, the OnePlus brand is set to be phased out entirely. We have yet to hear anything in Europe about certain devices and a smartwatch that were recently announced for some regions.

For consumers, any integration need not be immediately apparent. Oppo and OnePlus have long been releasing smartphones that share many technical similarities. There is also speculation about Realme’s position. That brand may be given a clearer role as a budget range within the Oppo portfolio, although nothing has yet been confirmed on this.

An important caveat is that, for the time being, the rumours mainly focus on the situation in India. It is therefore not yet clear whether any changes will also affect Europe or other markets.

Oppo itself has not yet made an official announcement regarding a merger of the brands. Realme has only confirmed the change of CEO in India and has made no further comments on the alleged plans. For the time being, therefore, these remain mere rumours, although several signs suggest that a great deal is changing behind the scenes at the three smartphone manufacturers.
