“Nothing isn’t stopping”
Nothing has responded to reports that the company was set to stop selling smartphones in various markets. According to co-founder Akis Evangelidis, this story is untrue. On X, he even describes the earlier reports as “fake news” and emphasises that Nothing is not withdrawing from any market.
The rumours arose after an Indian tech publication reported that Nothing was planning to withdraw from several countries. That news was subsequently picked up by various media outlets. According to the anonymous sources behind the original report, the company was said to be scaling back its operations in various markets.
Reorganisation
According to Evangelidis, something else is going on. Nothing is undergoing a reorganisation to prepare for its next phase of growth. This involves, amongst other things, setting up new business units, including a separate AI division. Various national teams are also being merged into regional hubs, enabling the company to operate more efficiently. According to Nothing, these changes will have an impact on a number of roles within the organisation. The company has not disclosed exactly how many jobs will be lost. However, Evangelidis states that the figures previously reported are greatly exaggerated.
To emphasise that Nothing has no intention of ceasing operations, Evangelidis also highlights the performance of the Phone (4b). According to him, 29,537 units were sold on the first day of sales, which would have set a record within its price range.
Striking timing
Nothing’s response has only come after the reports had been widely picked up. The editor of the original article says that the company had already had a week to respond to the findings, but that it did not issue a denial at the time. It was only after the discussion had grown that Evangelidis’s public statement appeared.
The situation is reminiscent of what happened previously with OnePlus. That company, too, denied for a long time that it had plans to withdraw from certain markets and described such reports as inaccurate. Ultimately, however, it later transpired that OnePlus had indeed ceased operations in several countries.
For Nothing, the matter remains, for the time being, a clear denial. According to the company, there is no question of a withdrawal from markets, but solely an internal reorganisation intended to ensure a more efficient structure and to create scope for future growth. Whether this has dispelled all doubts remains to be seen in the coming period.
