HTC Evo 3D
The HTC Evo 3D was the brainchild of the Taiwanese manufacturer and was released in mid-2011. The device had a special display for viewing 3D images. No special glasses were required for this. It was a rather large beast, featuring a screen that was substantial for its time: 4.3 inches with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. Its weight of 170 grams was also considerable for the time. Thanks to the 3D screen, you could not only view and take 3D photos, but also play 3D videos, and there were a few 3D games available. However, it was important to hold the device directly in front of you; at an angle, the 3D effect largely disappeared.
On the back of the HTC Evo 3D was a special 3D camera that allowed you to take 5-megapixel photos. Thanks to the use of two cameras, you could also take 3D photos. Each camera captured the image from a different angle. It was also possible to record videos in this way. On the front was a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.
Furthermore, the smartphone was equipped with a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 1 GB of storage, which could be expanded with a memory card of up to 32 GB. The Android 2.3 Gingerbread interface was overlaid with HTC’s own skin: HTC Sense. HTC later released an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the Evo 3D. The battery capacity was 1,730 mAh. It featured an FM radio, an HDMI output and a physical camera button. The HTC was regarded as robust, with a soft-touch plastic back featuring aluminium accents.
The HTC Evo 3D was launched in 2011 and carried a hefty price tag of 599 euros. Its main competitor in the same market was the LG Optimus 3D, which we discussed earlier in ‘The forgotten smartphone’.
