Huawei Pura X viewed at the MWC
New, the Huawei Pura X certainly isn't. Since the smartphone is not being released for the Dutch market, we have never actually paid attention to it before. The device is there only for the Chinese market. Time to do so anyway, because it is quite a special device. At Mobile World Congress, we were able to take a detailed look at the device.

You open the Pura X like a flip phone, as you know it from, say, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7. But there is something substantially different. Namely, the screen is significantly wider than the average flip phone. And that sets Huawei's smartphone apart. After playing with it for a while, we can say that it is actually quite a nice size for a foldable. You have the benefits of a larger screen when you flip the device open, with the advantages of the more compact of the flip smartphone.

Internally, the Huawei Pura X has a 6.3-inch OLED screen (1-120Hz) and externally you get a 3.5-inch OLED display. There is 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage and a 4720 mAh battery. For taking photos, Huawei has equipped the smartphone with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 40-megapixel wide-angle lens and an 8-megapixel telephoto lens. The fourth sensor is a 1.5MP multispectral camera. On the front, there is a 10.7-megapixel front camera.

The external screen can be used perfectly well to carry out certain things. Think music player, your health app with activities and more. In addition, you can send messages via the smaller front screen. As you see with many Chinese brands, there is plenty of playful animations and animated animals.

Huawei was incredibly popular in the Netherlands years ago, for example with the Huawei P30 Pro. Now the brand is considerably less popular, due to US sanctions that have kept Huawei devices away from Google services for years. This means no Android experience with things like Google Maps, the Play Store, Gmail and other services. The Pura X also runs on Huawei's own Harmony OS operating system, where you can download apps from Huawei's AppGallery. Fun fact: the DroidApp app can also be found there.
Huawei has released the device for around 900 euros.
