Huawei Mate 80 Pro and Pro Max at MWC
At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week, you couldn't ignore Huawei's stand. The Chinese manufacturer had almost one entire hall filled with its own services and products. The space bait not only for its own smartphones, foldables, tablets and accessories, but Huawei also had a big presence in the areas of networking and AI. At Huawei's stand, for instance, we also saw the Huawei Pura X; a phone with an unusual foldable size. But the Mate 80 Pro and Mate 80 Pro Max were also present.

The two smartphones were announced in late November for the Chinese market, and a "global version" was recently presented by the brand. They are all stylish phones with their own design, recognisable by the two rings. Huawei refers to these as the 'Iconic Dual Space Rings'. These are the circular camera module and the graceful thick ring underneath. According to Huawei, the latter gives an extra dimension to he device, creating a design that is recognisable from every angle. The Mate 80 Pro models are available in black, blue and gold.

With the Mate 80 Pro and Mate 80 Pro Max, Huawei again has incredibly stylish devices in its portfolio. Exactly as we have come to expect from the manufacturer. Because design was always important at the brand. We saw that with the Huawei P8, for example, as well as the Huawei P20 and the Huawei P30 Pro. There were also plenty of beautiful devices in the Mate series, including the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Huawei provides the devices with excellent specifications. At least a 6.75-inch screen, its own Kirin 9030 Pro chipset and a 5750 mAh or 6000 mAh battery with 100W wired charging or 80W wireless. On top of that, the Pro Max model also offers an incredibly comprehensive camera setup. This is a 50-megapixel main camera, 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens, another 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens and a 40-megapixel wide-angle lens. The telecameras allow 4 and 6.2 times optical zoom. There is 5G, IP69 certification and a selfie camera with depth sensor for reliable face recognition.

For years, we have tested a wide variety of Huawei devices on the DroidApp editorial team. The latest was the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. Due to US sanctions, the phones no longer came with Android and Google services, causing a huge drop in popularity for the models. It doesn't look like Huawei will be able to release Android devices again anytime soon. If it does, we're happy to be at the front of the queue. The brand makes very stylish, good devices, but what good is just the Huawei AppGallery?

It is interesting that Huawei is showing at Mobile World Congress what it is working on today. Apart from accessories. We asked Huawei Netherlands if there are any plans to release the Mate 80 models in our country at all: the answer, unfortunately, is no.
