Google releases dedicated Gemini app for Mac

Do you use a Mac and enjoy working with AI? Then there's good news. Because Google has released a native Gemini app for macOS, allowing you to use the AI assistant right on your desktop.

Gemini for macOS

With Google's new Gemini app, you no longer need to go to a browser to use the AI service. You simply open Gemini with the Option + Space shortcut. You will also find Gemini in the menu bar, so you always have it at your fingertips.

The interface is recognisable if you have already used Gemini via the web. You get a compact, pill-shaped bar where you can ask questions. A plus button lets you add additional context, such as files, photos, Google Drive documents or even full windows of your screen.

The latter is immediately one of the most useful features. Namely, you can share what's on your screen and ask Gemini for help. Think of analysing a graph, summarising a document or checking data in a spreadsheet. This allows you to work faster without constantly switching apps.

At the bottom of the interface, you will find different tools. For example, you can have images, videos or music generated, as well as use features such as deep research, guided learning and a canvas for creative tasks. For more options, there is a separate menu with additional tools.

The app also supports voice input and lets you easily switch between different AI models. Everything automatically syncs with your Google account, so your work and settings stay the same everywhere.

According to Google, this desktop version is meant to speed up your workflow. Whether you're working on a report, planning or doing creative work, you can use Gemini without interrupting your current task. In doing so, Google promises that this is just the beginning, and more features will follow in the future.

The app is available worldwide for Macs with macOS 15 or newer and is free to download.
