Gmail rolls out update with new Material 3 design to everyone

A new update is being distributed to users of the Gmail app. Google's mail app is getting the new Material 3 Expressive design, and in the process it will also come with handy improvements. Earlier, the new design surfaced, but now you too can benefit from it.

New update for Gmail

If you use Gmail on your Android device, you can use the updated application from now on. Google has started distributing an update showing the new Material 3 Expressive design. This design surfaced back in early June, and now it is being distributed to every Android user. Although the new Material 3 Expressive design is mainly promoted among Android 16, it does not matter which version your Android device is running on. We already know the new design from Google Calendar too, which recently got the update.

With the new design in Gmail, you will see some changes in shapes and designs. For instance, the red and green bar of swipe actions are no longer there as a block, but are rounded. Also, the mail app brings a bit more overview to the mails. Mostly visually, the changes are noticeable; in terms of functionality, not much has changed. Everything is a bit more in the style of Material 3 Expressive. More use is made of colours, shapes and softer transitions without hard lines. The buttons at the bottom of the screen have also been updated, with, for example, answering a call.

The update is activated server-side, so you don't need to download an update from the Google Play Store.
