Chat app Signal introduces 'Secure Backups' and makes storage more secure

Signal is an increasingly popular application for sending messages. Although WhatsApp is still the most popular, Signal focuses mainly on privacy. A new feature is now available and that is Secure Backups, or secure backups.

Secure backups in Signal

Signal has a large group of loyal users. In recent times, the application became increasingly popular because of the privacy the app values. The introduction of Meta AI in WhatsApp didn't exactly help that either. Developers have recently been working on a new feature for the service and it is now available. Users can now use Secure Backups, which securely stores backups of your chats.

First, the feature is available to Android users with the beta version of the application. Until now, there was never a way to restore your messages if you didn't backup locally, or transfer messages from one device to another according to the roadmap. The Secure Backup feature should tackle this problem.

Signal Secure Backups

Signal is making the feature available for free for 100MB of messages and media from the past 45 days. If you want more message history and media from longer than 45 days to be backed up, you will have to pay for it. The amount mentioned is $1.99 per month. Converted, this is 1.69 euros per month. Signal explains that this is the first time money has been charged for a feature. This is due to the fact that media requires a lot of space on servers, and these are expensive. In the process, no data is sold and so it takes money to cover the cost with a user's contribution.

With Secure Backups, a new backup can be made every 24 hours. When you want to restore data, you need a 64-character key that you get. So you need to keep that restore key safe. Incidentally, using the backups is not mandatory. The feature should become widely available soon and also be released for iOS and Desktop, Signal informed.
