Soon no more Signal in Europe?
If it is up to chat app Signal, an exit from Europe is realistic if the EU introduces chat control. There are European plans to make secure communications interceptable to governments. This means chat apps that take encryption and other security measures will have to open a backdoor to governments. Signal CEO Meredith Whittaker let it be known; "If we were faced with the choice of whether to undermine the integrity of our encryption and our data protection guarantees or leave Europe, we would unfortunately make the decision to leave that market." The statement was made to German news agency dpa.

Chat Control, as the bill is called, aims to prevent and combat child sexual abuse online. Chat Control should make it possible to detect such material. For this, platforms and apps would have to implement interception facilities, Tweakers writes. This month, the new proposal was supposed to be discussed in the European Justice and Home Affairs Council. At the moment, this plan is not supported by the Netherlands. It is not known what other countries think of the plans.
