Samsung reveals why you won't receive Google Play updates

Some time ago, we shared the news that Samsung smartphones and tablets will no longer receive Google Play updates. Now Samsung has shared information on why these system updates were and are not being rolled out to your Samsung device.

Failure of Google Play updates at Samsung

DroidApp wrote in December that Samsung no longer seems to be rolling out Google Play updates for its devices. The manufacturer kept its lips tightly sealed to say exactly what this was due to. After our coverage, more and more users managed to report to us that they too have not been getting any new Google Play system updates. Now Samsung has commented on the cause of this.

Speaking to Germany's Heise, the company reveals that it is true that no Google Play updates have been rolled out. Samsung commented, "When introducing new devices or major One UI updates, Samsung only uses software verified by the company. Samsung has temporarily suspended the distribution of Google updates to avoid potential problems." Samsung is said to be looking to resume the rollout of Google Play updates this month, in January.

Different types of updates are being rolled out for Android devices, we wrote earlier in our Update Guide. Besides Google Play updates, Google also releases a new security update every month. Then there are the bigger updates from Android itself, with a new Android version. Samsung itself also releases One UI updates in between.
