Samsung Galaxy devices haven't received Google Play updates for months

More and more reports are circulating on the internet about updates for Samsung Galaxy devices being delayed. This specifically concerns the Google Play system updates. These usually appear monthly, but for Samsung it has remained quiet for some time.

No Google Play updates on your Samsung

A large number of Samsung devices seem to have not been updated with a new Google Play update for some time. This is specifically about the Google Play system updates, and is therefore separate from the Android version updates and security updates. Those updates do in fact come through as normal. For instance, several Samsung devices were recently updated with the December update. But as for the Google Play updates, there is thus quite a delay.

It is a problem that has been going on for some time, according to research by DroidApp. In several places on the worldwide web, there are reports of updates lagging behind, including on Reddit. The problem is not only playing out in the Netherlands, but seems to be the case worldwide.

DroidApp reader Richard reports to us that his Galaxy A55 stands the September Google Play system update. With that, the Galaxy A55 still seems to be getting away pretty well. On the internet, there are many reports of other Galaxy owners lagging behind for longer. For instance, we see reports of several Galaxy S23 owners sitting on the August patch, although even there some are already on the September one. We also see outdated patches on other devices. On the Galaxy A56, for instance, we see the July patch.

The solution

Google itself pushes out these updates to the various devices, although they have to be passed on by Samsung. Where exactly the problem lies is not known. For now, there is nothing left but patience. Samsung's development team has been especially busy recently with the rollout of Android 16 update. Now that that wind has died down more, it seems obvious that the update machine will be up and running again soon.

If you own a Galaxy device, we'd love to hear which one you have, and which Google patch you're on. You can find this via the following steps: Settings > Security and privacy > Updates > Google Play system update. You can tap this, to check if a new update is available for you.
