Do you have a Pixel phone running Android 16 and can't manage to install the latest Google Play system update? You're not the only one. In recent weeks, several Pixel users have been reporting that the update fails during the installation process.
Problems with Google Play system update
There are problems installing the new Google Play system update, according to reports from several users. When you manually tap "Check for updates" in Settings > Security and privacy > System and updates, the update does download, but then the message "Update failed" appears. This problem occurs with both stable Android 16 versions and the latest betas. In the process, problems pop up here and there for users with the One UI 8 Beta update or other devices already running Android 16.

Not all Pixel owners are affected. If you do get affected, your device is stuck on the May build of the Google Play system update.
Google has confirmed on its support forums that there is indeed a bug. The company recommends not performing a factory reset, as that will not solve the problem. Instead, Google is working on a fix that will be rolled out via a future Google Play system update.
These system updates will allow Google to send small new features and security patches directly to Android devices, without requiring a full software update. So for now, you just have to wait until the new update is available and the issue is automatically fixed.
