After 17 years, Mozilla discontinues read-later service Pocket

Pocket is ceasing to exist. After 17 years, the curtain falls on the service that allowed you to read articles at a later time. Pocket was previously known as Read It Later. Within two months, it will be over and out.

Mozilla discontinues Pocket

Mozilla will discontinue Pocket, the popular service that for years allowed users to save articles and web pages to read later, on 8 July 2025. As of today, the app is no longer available in the app stores and no new accounts can be created. Users will be given until 8 October to download their saved data before it is permanently deleted.

With the termination of Pocket, a familiar name within the landscape of content curation disappears. Mozilla, which acquired Pocket in 2017, cites changing user habits as the main reason for the closure. According to the company, the decision was made to continue investing in other tools and features within Firefox.

From 8 July, Pocket will switch to export mode. Users can download their data via a dedicated export page, where saved URLs, titles, notes and markups are available. For voice notes, Mozilla does not offer an export option for the time being.

Subscribers to Pocket Premium do not need to take any action themselves. Monthly subscriptions will be terminated immediately, and annual subscriptions will be automatically refunded pro rata after 8 July.

The newsletter 'Pocket Hits' will continue to exist, but under a new name: Ten Tabs. This change will take effect on 17 June. The newsletter will then only be sent on weekdays, unless users explicitly sign up for weekly delivery. The weekend edition will stop.
