Honor Robot Phone in action at MWC: a new special feature

Honor demonstrated its new Robot Phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The smartphone is supposed to tap into a new segment and is also a competitor to the DJI Osmo Pocket camera.

Chinese manufacturer Honor has been standing on its own two feet for some time now, having previously been separated from Huawei. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the brand showed off the Honor Robot Phone. What makes this phone 'robotic' is the 3-axis gimbal on top of the device. You can compare this to the DJI Osmo Pocket camera. The 3-axis mechanical stabilisation is combined with an AI stabilisation motor.

The wide angle of view allows the camera to track movements and objects while filming and shooting. For this, the Honor features AI object tracking. According to Honor, thanks to training with millions of simulations, the camera can automatically understand what you want to capture. This can be done with either 90-degree upright or 180-degree landscape. In addition, the camera is capable of rotating 360 degrees.

During the demo in Barcelona, a dancer demonstrated how the camera works. The smartphone's screen shows which object is being tracked so that it is always in focus. On Honor's stand, it works perfectly. If you don't use the camera, it can fold itself next to the camera module. This then sits folded up, instead of folded away. You can slide the slider over it closed, which serves as protection. The primary camera has a 200-megapixel image sensor. The whole thing is powered by a micromotor.
