Nano Banana 2
Google has announced Nano Banana 2 as a new image model in the Gemini app. Officially, the model is called Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. It follows Gemini 2.5 Flash Image (Nano Banana) from August and Gemini 3 Pro Image (Nano Banana Pro) from November.
With Nano Banana 2, Google says you get richer textures, sharper details and more vivid lighting. The model should follow your instructions more accurately so that complex requirements are better translated into the final image. In the process, it uses more real-time information from the web to render specific subjects more accurately.

A key improvement is the consistency of subjects. You can maintain the likeness of up to five characters and the accuracy of up to 14 objects within one workflow. This makes it possible to create storyboards or build visual stories without elements changing in between. You can also generate images in different aspect ratios and resolutions, from 512 pixels to 4K.
In addition, the Flash model now includes professional features that were previously for the Pro version. Think accurate text rendering and translation and improved world knowledge. For example, you can use it to create data visualisations and infographics, turn notes into diagrams or generate marketing mock-ups. The model should also produce more readable text in images, something that was often difficult with previous image generators.
In the Gemini app, Nano Banana 2 replaces the Pro version in the default view of all models (Fast, Thinking and Pro). If you are a free user, you no longer have access to Nano Banana Pro. If you are a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriber, you can still use the Pro version. For that, after generating an image, click on the menu with the three dots to generate the image again with Nano Banana Pro. According to Google, that version is meant for highly detailed tasks that require maximum actual precision. The reason why Google is saying goodbye to direct access to Pro is not known, but presumably it is due to the processing power required for these tasks.
