Google Maps update brings subtle Material 3 Expressive tweaks

A new version of Google Maps is rolling out for Android. The new version of the mapping service is enhanced with Material 3 Expressive improvements. These are some minor tweaks, but ones that are immediately eye-catching. Think revamped maps.

The Material 3 Expressive sauce is the key-feature of Android 16, yet we see it mainly on Pixel devices themselves, as other manufacturers also apply it less. Fortunately, there are then the various (Google) apps, which also get the new sauce. Google previously brought various Material 3 elements to the navigation app, but now it is taking it one step further.

What immediately catches the eye is the use of so-called containers. This bundles certain information into maps. This without fuzzy separators. The background is grey, while the information from the fields is separated with a white line. You can see what that looks like in the screenshot above.

What is noticeable is that the buttons for things like navigation, calling or other options has been moved to the bottom. Although for now, this feature is only for the beta version, and we won't see it yet in the stable version of Google Maps. The colleagues at 9to5Google write about it, sharing the screenshot above. The above change is immediately visible to everyone. It is not known when the changing buttons will be rolled out to the stable version.
