Google Calendar brings new Material 3 Expressive design after update

A new update is being distributed for the Google Calendar app. The application for Android gets a new lick of paint. We see the new Material 3 Expressive design being rolled out to the app. In doing so, your phone does not have to be running Android 16.

The new Material 3 Expressive design plays an important role in the latest Android version. Although the updated design will only be rolled out in Android 16 with a future update, we do see it reflected in more apps. Users of the Google Calendar app will see the new design in the app from now on. This does not necessarily require your device to be running on Android 16, you will also see the change on previous Android versions.

Google Calendar now features a bit more "blocks", also called containers. You can see this in, for example, days and hours. These blocks also provide more overview. In the previous version of Google Calendar, for example, hours were separated with a light grey line. Another change can be seen with the days. No longer are just the first letter of the day shown, but the first two letters of the day of the week. For instance, Tuesday is indicated by 'di'. If you use your smartphone in English, you will see the first three letters.

Another improvement is the presence of more dynamic colours. We see this in both light mode and the dark theme.

The update for the Google Calendar app is activated on the server side. This eliminates the need to download an update from the Google Play Store. Just waiting is enough to be offered the new design.
