The forgotten smartphone: Huawei Ascend D Quad (XL) from 2012

Thirteen years ago, there was the arrival of the quad-core processor in smartphones. Along with HTC and LG, Huawei was also there with a quad-core smartphone. In this edition of our feature ‘The forgotten smartphone’ we go back to 2012 and discuss the long-forgotten Huawei Ascend D Quad.

In our 'The forgotten smartphone' and 'The forgotten phone' section, a wide variety of devices pass by. We previously brought out the Nokia 8210, dating back to 1999. This week, it is time for a smartphone from Huawei. Back in 2012, the Huawei Ascend D Quad was released. Ascend was the model name it used for years. The Huawei P8 series saw the abandonment of this name. The Huawei Ascend D Quad probably doesn't tell you much anymore. Interestingly, this device was one of the first devices with a quad-core processor.

In 2012, Huawei announced the Ascend D Quad at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. During this show, we also saw two other devices that appeared with a quad-core processor. These were the LG Optimus 4X HD and the HTC One X. Alongside the D Quad came the Ascend D Quad XL. The differences were the battery capacity and the size of the device. The phone featured the Huawei K3V2 quad-core processor, which thus came from the Chinese manufacturer's own factory. For the other two models, it was an NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.

On board the Huawei Ascend D Quad, we saw a 4.5-inch IPS-LCD display from Toshiba. This delivered an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. Furthermore, Huawei's smartphone was equipped with 1GB of working memory and 8GB of storage. There was room for a memory card to expand the memory. For taking photos, you could get started with the 8-megapixel camera, which could also film in Full-HD. On the front was a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The Huawei Ascend D Quad was further equipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Here, Huawei had made several tweaks, but they were much less extreme than how we know them from the EMUI skin. Indeed, it gave the Nexus experience to the device. Looking at the further specs of the smartphone, we end up with WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0. With the Ascend D Quad, we saw an 1800mAh battery. The battery capacity at the Ascend D Quad XL came out to 2600 mAh.

The Huawei Ascend D Quad summarised in 3 points:

  • No EMUI skin, but a layer close to Stock Android
  • 4.5-inch IPS-LCD display
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
