The forgotten smartphone: HTC One M8

HTC was very popular a few years ago with very nice smartphones. Meanwhile, not much is left of the Taiwanese manufacturer, in fact, we see nothing of it anymore. In this edition of ‘The forgotten smartphone’ we discuss the HTC One M8.

We have chosen the HTC One M8 in this edition of 'The forgotten smartphone'. The phone was the successor to the first HTC One, which was also called One M7. As linked, we also discussed that one in our weekly column. The HTC One M8 was announced in March 2014, some 11.5 years ago now. It was in shops at the beginning of April that year.

Updates

The HTC One M8 was a special phone. In several countries, an HTC One M8 was released with Windows Phone. At least with us, it appeared with Android, version 4.4.2 KitKat. Later, updates to Android 5.0 Lollipop and Android 6.0 Marshmallow were released. Of course, the phone also featured HTC Sense and HTC BlinkFeed, here you could find an overview of shortcuts, calendar items and social media updates.

The Taiwanese manufacturer had equipped the phone with an aluminium body, which was rounded. This made the phone feel extra good in the hand, but was a bit slippery. Fingerprint scanners were not used in phones back then, so we did not see them on the One M8 either. However, we did see a 5.0-inch Super LCD3 display with Full-HD resolution and there was a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset.

Almost 12 years ago, an Android smartphone had enough with 2GB of working memory. There was also 16GB of storage available and a battery with a capacity of just 2600 mAh. You can't imagine that now.

Camera

In terms of camera, the HTC One M8 was reviewed very negatively. Not very surprising, as the phone featured a moderately performing 4 megapixel camera, and an additional depth camera. Especially the depth camera, which HTC had promoted heavily, was very disappointing in practice. Then again, the video camera was positive, but had to lack 4K filming. Competitors offered much better cameras.

Competition

The HTC One M8 was released by HTC while competition was fierce. Samsung was present with the Galaxy S5, Sony with the Xperia Z2 and LG with the LG G2. Later, HTC released another Google Play Edition of the M8, without Sense addition in the interface.

HTC released the One M8 in the Netherlands where the device had a price tag of 449 euros.

HTC One M8 summarised in 5 points:

  • 5.0-inch Full-HD camera
  • Snapdragon 801 processor
  • Android with Sense
  • 4MP camera with depth camera
  • Aluminium casing
