Swollen battery on Pixel 7 series
The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are now three years old. Yet the internet is already full of reports of swollen batteries on these two devices. The posts are scattered from around the web, such as on Reddit and Google's own support forum. The problem seems to be so present in several users that huge gaps appeared between the frame and the screen. For some users, there were first reports of a rapidly draining battery, overheating or the device failing before the thick battery was discovered.
Reports indicate that the first reports stemmed from the past few months, when the phones had been on the market for just over two years. But more reports have followed recently. Of course, batteries are subject to wear and tear, but a dangerous swelling of the battery, as seen in the photos, is unusual. Someone on Reddit reports that on his device, the screen came off completely, without being exposed to heat.
How Google deals with it varies from user to user. For some users, the battery or even the device was replaced free of charge. For other users, their device was exchanged for a refurbished model. Yet other users received a quote of $130. Interestingly, the device is not part of the replacement programme set up for the Pixel 7a. In fact, the Google Pixel 7a suffers from exactly the same problem. In a thread, Google lets you know what to do in case of a swollen battery.
So battery problems are not new for Pixel smartphone owners. Not only the Pixel 7 models are suffering from problems. The Google Pixel 6a was previously in the news with several faulty batteries and with the Pixel 3 and 3 XL, reports of swollen batteries also came out.
What in case of a swollen battery?
Should you notice that your device is suffering from a swollen battery; stop using it immediately. It can cause major problems. Report directly to the seller (or directly to Google).
