Android 16 QPR1 for Pixels
Google is releasing a major update for Pixel devices: Android 16 QPR1. This release coincides with September' s Pixel Feature Drop and September's security patch. The updated Material 3 Expressive design takes centre stage, with tweaks to the interface, settings and personalisation.

Innovations in quick settings and notifications
The Quick Settings in Android are more flexible: tiles can be resized, with a maximum of 16 (4×4). Categories like Connectivity, Utilities and Privacy make it clearer. Notifications have also been improved: app icons are displayed more clearly and other notifications respond subtly when you swipe one away. We already know the improvements from the Pixel 10 series, which already got the new design features.
Lock screen and media controls
On the lock screen, date, day and weather are now closer to the clock or in the corner. Status bar icons have been redesigned. The media player has a new rectangular pause button and livelier themes. The volume control and sound settings have also been updated with the Material 3 design.

Pixel Launcher and multitasking
The Pixel Launcher in At a Glance leaves more space for an extra row of apps. The search bar has been redesigned, with an AI button and a new G logo. The app view appears as a worksheet instead of full screen. In the multitasking menu, the app logo with name is now in the top left, with additional options via a dropdown.
Wallpaper and personalisation
The Wallpaper & Style app has new shapes, colours and effects such as fog, rain and sun, all tailored to the weather. Cinematic 3D backgrounds remain available. The clock on the lock screen is now customisable in style and width, and notifications can be set as compact or full list. Dynamic colours are more vibrant in apps and system.

Settings and controls
The settings menu has been made clearer with colourful icons and containers by preference. Sound and vibration have been redesigned, and switches now show a tick or cross.
Availability
Android 16 QPR1 is rolling out to Pixel 6 and newer, including Pixel Tablet and Fold. The Pixel 10 series already had Android 16, but will receive the September security update as of now.
